New technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet-of-things and the blockchain on the other hand challenge existing frameworks and require an interactive debate between startups, citizens and politicians. Innovation in smart cities is most successful if developed in collaboration with a wider population. Such technologies are rooted in very specific value systems ranging from very restrictive to very open. Technologies are per se neutral, what count is how they are deployed. Therefore, it is key that new technologies are deeply embedded in strong value and cultural systems. Shaping these systems is the mission of the Urban Innovation Association.
